Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) is a steel plant located in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, India. It is the first steel producing plant in India and mainly produces railways.

The name Bhilai originated from the village of Bhilai where the Bhils resided, which is located to the north of this city. Till 1956, Bhilai village was a small village with a population of 350. The Nap factory was established in 1955 under an agreement reached in India and Soviet Russia. Industrial activities in the area increased with the establishment of the Bhilai Steel Plant factory.

On 14 March 1955, between the Indian government and the then Soviet Union, there was an agreement to set up a one million tonne steel plant in Bhilai, which not only Bhilai, not only Bhilai, but also transformed the hundreds of villages around it.It was decided to build the Bhilai Steel Plant and its township to the north of the Mumbai-Howrah railway line and to the south of it was given land for temporary residence for the workers. The concept was that after the factory started, the said temporary residence would be removed and the land would be vacant, but this could not happen. Settlement increased and settlements without basic facilities became.The population of Durg-Bhilai increased by 86 percent in the decade 1951–71 and 113 percent in the decade 1971–81. There was an increase of 89 percent in the decade 1981-91 and 77 percent in the decade 1991-2001.

The plant was established in 1955 with the help of the Soviet Union.
The factory was established under the Second Five-Year Plan (1956–61).

Ten times the Prime Minister’s Trophy for the best integrated steel plant in the country, the factory is the only manufacturer of railway tracks and heavy steel plates and major producer of structures in the nation. The sole supplier of the longest railway tracks of 260 meters in the country, the factory has an annual production capacity of 31 lakh 53 thousand tonnes of salable steel. The factory is also manufacturing special items like wire rod and merchant products.Bhilai Steel Plant is registered with ISO 9001: 2000 Quality Management System. Hence, all its marketable steel comes under ISO.Bhilai’s factories, its township and Dalli mines are also ISO 14001 related to the environmental management system. It is the only steel factory in the country that has got certifications in all these areas. The factory also holds SA: 8000 certificate for social responsibility and OHSAS-18001 certificate for occupational health and safety.Due to these internationally recognized certifications, the importance of Bhilai’s products increases even more and it is counted among the best organizations in the steel industry. Bhilai has been honored with several national awards and has received the CII-ITC Sustainability Award for three consecutive years.
